Pediatric and Geriatric care foundation is a philanthropic organisation started by two like minded friends over a cuppa. These were two close buddies who grew up together in their formative years while studying to become doctors. Seeing all the difficulties faced by unaffording patients attending a Govt.hospital setup, they had made up their mind that when the time arrives, they will do something about it. This urge to do something pushed them to lay the foundations for PG care. Humble beginnings. To start with they contributed themselves for the cause and gradually involved their close friends and classmates. Once they were sure that this is going to be a very useful and helpful organisation for the society, they started spreading the wings to involve more such like minded philanthropsts into their fold. First thing they did was to get all the permissions and licences in order from the Govt authorities of our country. Then after running the organisations for a good pilot period, they applied for the IT exemption under section 80(g) and got it as well. With all the right permissions in place the organisation started growing into the present status. Low operational expenses is one of the key focus of the organisaitons. The founder himself has been managing the show. The meetings would be held in somebody’s house or office solely with the purpose of saving all the funds available for the use of the needy. Unlike in many other organisations here almost 100% of the money donated goes to the beneficiary directly. The founders invest their time in a productive way to facilitate this. In effect, the charity is run with charitable contributions of the most precious resource – TIME – too. Apart from saving on salaries for employees it gives a sense of involvement and feeling of purpose for the person who is handling it. Even in mutual fund investments, there are administrative charges which runs to almost 15-25% of the money invested! But here, it is almost zero. Moreover, as many of the members themselves are doctors involved in patient care, many a times the contributions are in kind such as waiving off the professional charges thereby by helping in significantly reducing the final bills from the hospital. With discussions with the hospital management, even here the organisation manages to convince the hospital management in giving the needy all possible discounts. High reliability is another unique feature of this organisation. All the cases that come up for contribution is discussed on a case to case basis in the close knit group involving all the members before a decision to support is arrived at. This ensures ‘crowd verification’ something similar to crypto currency. Usually, there is always someone who knows somebody in connection to the patient, ultimately ensuring that the case receiving the funds is 100% genuine. Happy and grateful patients. Irrespective of the outcome of the patient’s illness, the people who receive support are uniformly happy because of the hassle free help at the time of their need. There is no running around involved for the patient sending in applications and meeting the office bearers etc… allowing them time to deal with the patient care more fully. The payments are made directly to the hospital at the time of billing to the amount agreed upon by the group. Many a times, the patients are not entirely unaffordable. It is just that the situation has overwhelmed them with mounting expenses on one side and dwindling of the sole earning member’s earning, who is also usually the care taker of the patient on the other side. They just need a helping hand to tide over the crisis. Many such patients have promised to return the funds back, when their situation allows pointing to the goodwill the organisation has gathered. This alone shows the genuinity of the charity funding as well as the sense of gratitude the patients are having towards the organisation. I personally have no doubts that it will grow into a giant organisation and I only wish the entire team who are working tirelessly towards this all the success. There can’t be a more genuine organisation who are doing such good work in their own way, making it easily one of the most reliable charitable organisations in our country.

Earlier, when I contributed to philanthropic work I was always circumspect about how the funds I donate to philanthropy will be used but with the PG care being an organization that is formed and managed mostly by volunteers who are mostly doctors and specialists in their fields, we are able to make sure that the money is used in the most judicious manner and benefits the most needy, not only in the form of financial assistance but also in terms of medical assistance whereby they would be assured that they are getting the best treatment possible and with specific goals in mind. I have been part of the decision making group of PG care and I think it has been a very valuable use of my time and it makes me very happy to see cases that we have supported that have good outcomes and seeing the smiles on the children’s faces brings the greatest satisfaction. Dr. Shravan, I must emphasize, has an untiring and then insatiable spirit and He continues to help his fellow countrymen even though he has been away from them for a long time. I think this requires an exceptional spirit of philanthropy and kindness and I’m happy to be a part of PG care and share this mutual feeling towards our countrymen with him.

Rarely do people ever think of doing something that makes the world a better place each day, and you all are doing it full-time! Keep doing what you do, you are an inspiration to many.

PG Care foundation is a voluntary organization supporting medical treatment for children and elderly as well as healthcare organizations. PG Care was started as the brainchild of Dr. Shravan Jyoti, a practicing NRI consultant Pathologist in the Caribbean islands, with the sole idea of bridging the gap for the needy during their times of financial distress for their healthcare needs. With humble beginnings in his state of Karnataka in 2013, this foundation is becoming quite popular, both among the needy people, as well as the supporting hospitals in South India. These hospitals agree to provide the quality healthcare at affordable prices and PG Care does indeed make sure that the quoted prices by the hospitals are indeed reasonable by making telephone calls, hospital visits and after discussion and approval of PG Care decision making committee. I have had the great pleasure of being associated with this organization in different ways. As a practicing orthopedic surgeon in Bangalore, I remember that PG Care has supported the treatment not only for pediatric fracture but also geriatric care for partial hip replacement surgery in a geriatric hip fracture patient. These procedures have taken place in private hospitals at concessional rates. When in trouble, phone a friend. I got a call from my ex driver Govind requesting me to help him, as his mother had sustained open fractures of both her forearm bones in Tamilnadu. As I was out of station for a week, I told him to approach PG Care Foundation for help besides requesting my orthopedic surgeon colleague Dr. Surendra for surgical treatment in his own Srinagar hospital. Govind , a very honest man, had fallen into troubled times after spending a lot of money on trying to unsuccessfully save his infant son who suffered from a fatal neurological condition. The moment Dr. Shravankumar came to know about this issue, he swung into action like our friendly neighborhood Spiderman, getting the evaluation with his team of PG Care volunteers and securing financial help to Govind’s mother for the medicines, implants and part of hospital expenses which were also subsidized by my orthopedic colleague Dr. Surendra. Govind was overjoyed with the unexpected help coming from society and hopes that PGCARE foundation should grow very big one day to help many more citizens of society. I am really amazed that Dr Shravan finds a lot of time to help society back home in India by organizing charity meets both in India and abroad besides networking with citizens who wish to help for charitable causes. I have been happily associated running a few marathons for fundraising for PG Care events , as well as donating my operative fees fully towards the annual fundraising events. I am sure the number of people willing to come forward to help is only going to increase in our country and worldwide too.

It’s been very enriching and overwhelming experience being part of PG Care Foundation. I have seen the group evolving from the scratch to present day where more than 100 needy young ones to elderly patient’s hearts have been touched. The way every member of the PG Care family responds and acts is amazing. Everyone is a volunteer and belong to varied fields and settled across the globe. When a case is presented to the group it appears as though everyone is working on it in a drawing room leaving no stone unturned to think of the different possible ways the case can be assisted. The best part is the foundation just doesn’t do financial assistance but also looks at the quality care and correct line of management by liaising with the treating physician & surgeons. The best part of PG Care Foundation is it’s clear motto, transparency, peer discussions and assisting almost every case referred. It has assisted more than 100 patients till now in diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitating, preventive and wellness programs. It is heartwarming feelings when we see the smiles back on those young kids and elders after good recovery and sending blessings & greetings to the group members. The contagious smile on their face keeps us all inspired and motivated to do even more. All this couldn’t have been possible without the continuous support and financial assistance of the many group members. The sparks sent by all the donors have ignited lights or Diyas in many homes. The good work started by the like minded people of this Foundation will continue to grow and add many more smiles. Come join us and make a difference in someone’s life.

PG Care Foundation is one of the few Foundations with a vision to offer help in healing for the needy. I can’t imagine one circumstance other than the need of health care that can put families easily in dire circumstances and has potential to easily bankrupt families. Loss of child to a health problem that would have been solved but for the lack of money can trigger life long guilt and shame for those other members surviving. I am proud to be part of this family with members offering their time, knowledge and resources towards the worthy goal of making it better for those unfortunate parents, brothers and sisters having been put in circumstances of seeing their loved ones suffer and potentially loose them. As a part of PG Care decision making group, I feel privileged to offer my expertise in medicine to help make the group make decisions to select families for help. Even though every person with family members going through major illness and lack resources deserve help, due to limited resources, a decision has to be made to limit help to those with potentially curable illness. This I feel is one of the hardest decisions that the group members have to make. I am very hopeful that this foundation has potential to grow significantly over the next decade reaching many more families in need.
