At PG Care Foundation, every case we support is close to our hearts, but some stories leave a lasting impact — stories like that of Soujanyaa R S, a 17-year-old girl from Bengaluru, whose life took a painful turn just as she was beginning to build her future.
Soujanyaa, a bright student pursuing her 1st PUC at Sheshadripuram Independent PU College, had her academic dreams suddenly interrupted when she began experiencing recurrent lung infections and increasing physical weakness over a span of three months. Her mother, Ms. Loganayaki M, an accounts assistant earning a modest salary of ₹20,000 per month, spared no effort in seeking answers, spending over ₹70,000 on consultations and diagnostic tests.
Eventually, their search brought them to Dr. Mahesh M.S. (Ortho), AIIMS alumni and Spine Surgeon at Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital, who delivered the devastating diagnosis:
Multifocal Tuberculosis with a pathological fracture of the D5 vertebra, spinal cord compression, and severe kyphosis.
This wasn’t just a medical emergency. It was a ticking clock.
Soujanyaa was at risk of permanent paralysis if treatment was delayed.
She could no longer attend classes, and her vibrant teenage years were being slowly overshadowed by illness.
The recommended treatment — a deformity correction surgery involving pedicle screw instrumentation, VCR, and fusion with intraoperative neuro-monitoring — came with a daunting price tag of ₹4,00,000 (~$4,705). For a family already under financial stress, this amount seemed nearly impossible to gather.
That’s when Dr. Mahesh, Mr. Keval (employed at the same company as the Soujanyaa’s mother, is now a dedicated member of the PG Care Foundation family), and other well-wishers stepped in and referred the case to PG Care Foundation. We immediately verified the urgency and authenticity of the case. Understanding the criticality, we pledged ₹1,00,000 (~$1,200) to support the surgery without delay.
On 23rd December 2023, Soujanyaa underwent the following procedure successfully:
D2–D9 Pedicle screw instrumentation + decompression + vertebral column resection + fusion under general anaesthesia.
We’re thrilled to share that the surgery was successful!
Soujanyaa is now on the path to recovery and will be able to walk again soon.
These were the heartfelt words shared by Mr. Keval, whose support and emotional connection to this case added another layer of meaning. As a survivor of Tubercular Meningitis himself, this case was deeply personal for him. He knows what it means to battle such a condition and come out on the other side.
We extend our deepest gratitude to Dr. Mahesh, whose expert hands performed the complex surgery, and to all our supporters who make moments like this possible.
PG Care Foundation was honored to play a role in giving Soujanyaa her life back — the opportunity to walk, study, dream, and live without the shadow of pain and paralysis.
To everyone who supports us — whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word — you are the reason these stories have happy endings. This case reminds us all that when we act with compassion and urgency, we become the miracle someone is waiting for.
Grateful to everyone who has been with us on this journey since 2013.
Together, we continue to prove that no child should be left behind because of financial hurdles.
